A two-phase free boundary problem for a semilinear elliptic equation
In this paper we study a two-phase free boundary problem for a semilinear elliptic equation on a bounded domain $Dsubset mathbb{R}^{n}$ with smooth boundary. We give some results on the growth of solutions and characterize the free boundary points in terms of homogeneous harmonic polynomials using a fundamental result of Caffarelli and Friedman regarding the representation of functions whose ...
متن کاملA parabolic free boundary problem modeling electrostatic MEMS
The evolution problem for a membrane based model of an electrostatically actuated microelectromechanical system (MEMS) is studied. The model describes the dynamics of the membrane displacement and the electric potential. The latter is a harmonic function in an angular domain, the deformable membrane being a part of the boundary. The former solves a heat equation with a right hand side that depe...
متن کاملA Parabolic Free Boundary Problem with Bernoulli Type Condition on the Free Boundary
Consider the parabolic free boundary problem ∆u− ∂tu = 0 in {u > 0} , |∇u| = 1 on ∂{u > 0} . For a realistic class of solutions, containing for example all limits of the singular perturbation problem ∆uε − ∂tuε = βε(uε) as ε → 0, we prove that one-sided flatness of the free boundary implies regularity. In particular, we show that the topological free boundary ∂{u > 0} can be decomposed into an ...
متن کاملFree Boundary Regularity in the Parabolic Fractional Obstacle Problem
The parabolic obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian naturally arises in American option models when the assets prices are driven by pure jump Lévy processes. In this paper we study the regularity of the free boundary. Our main result establishes that, when s > 12 , the free boundary is a C 1,α graph in x and t near any regular free boundary point (x0, t0) ∈ ∂{u > φ}. Furthermore, we als...
متن کاملBoundary Layers in a Semilinear Parabolic Problem
We study a singular perturbation problem for a certain type of reaction diiusion equation with a space-dependent reaction term. We compare the eeect that the presence of boundary layers versus internal layers has on the existence and stability of stationary solutions. In particular, we show that the associated eigenvalues are of diierent orders of magnitude for the two kinds of layers.
